Are you a disabled, d-Deaf, neurodivergent, chronically ill or marginalized artist or activist looking to take on an international leadership role? We are looking for you to join our International Advisory Board (IAB) for the project Reimagining Tales.

This is an opportunity to influence how inclusive dance and theatre for young audiences is created in Europe, to share your lived and professional knowledge at an international level, and to contribute to concrete artistic, educational, and methodological outcomes.

About the Project

Reimagining Tales: Inclusive Narratives in the European Performing Arts for Young Generations is a 24-month project running from February 2026 to January 2028.

The project challenges the exclusion of marginalized children and young people—especially disabled, d/Deaf, neurodivergent, racialized, and gender-diverse youth—from performing arts and cultural narratives.

Project partners:

ArteVOX Teatro (Italy)  leads the project, specializing in visual and puppet theater, making performances accessible to neurodivergent and d/Deaf children.

Kopla Bunz (Luxembourg) creates interdisciplinary works blending music, dance, and theater, with a focus on multilingual storytelling and inclusive, community-based projects.

Dansema Dance Theatre (Lithuania) is a pioneer in contemporary dance for young audiences, specializing in movement-based and sensory-friendly performances for children with developmental and visual disabilities.

What Will Happen in the Project?

Inclusive Artistic Residencies: Three artistic residencies (Italy, Luxembourg, Lithuania) where professional artists will create new performances for young audiences. A traditional tale for children will be reworked through disability-led, anti-ableist, and intersectional lenses.

Accessibility as Aesthetics: Accessibility tools (such as sign language, audio descriptions, tactile scenography, relaxed performance principles, sensory dramaturgy) will be used as core creative elements from the start.

Local Focus Groups: Each residency includes a focus group with marginalized children and young people, who provide feedback and lived perspectives as dramaturgical advisors.

Capacity-Building Workshops: International “train-the-trainer” workshops will support artists, educators, teachers, and cultural programmers to develop inclusive dance and theatre practices for their own contexts.

What Is the International Advisory Board?

The International Advisory Board is a small group of disabled and marginalized professionals who act as the project’s ethical, political, and artistic compass.

As an Advisory Board member, you will not manage the project, but you will contribute to defining its direction, values, and outcomes.

Who Can Apply?

This call is open to artists, activists, educators, cultural workers, researchers who:

  • Identify as disabled, d/Deaf, neurodivergent, chronically ill, and/or

  • Have lived experience of other forms of marginalization (for example: racialization, gender marginalization, migration background, class-based exclusion)

Background

We are particularly interested in people with experience in one or more of the following areas:

  • Accessible performance and design
  • Inclusive and anti-ableist dramaturgy and storytelling
  • Inclusive dance and/or theatre pedagogy
  • Minority representation and diversity in the arts
  • Disability-led, d/Deaf-led, and neurodivergent-led artistic practices

We strongly encourage applications from young people and emerging practitioners, including those who may not yet have extensive professional experience. You do not need a long CV to apply.

We welcome fresh, critical, and unique perspectives, lived experience, and ways of thinking that challenge dominant narratives in the performing arts. If you bring insight, curiosity, and a commitment to inclusive and anti-ableist values—even if you are early in your career—we want to get to know you!

Lived experience, community involvement, self-organized practice, activism, informal learning, and experimental or non-institutional work are all considered valid and valuable forms of expertise.

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

– be at least 18 years old at the time of application;

– be resident in Europe;

– have a minimum B2 level of written and spoken English, as English will be the working language of the Advisory Board.

What do we expect from a Board Member?

As a member of the International Advisory Board, you will:

  • Help ensure the project remains anti-ableist, intersectional, and disability-led

  • Provide feedback on artistic processes, accessibility choices, and ethical questions

  • Advise on the development of the Methodology Pack (see below)

Methodology Pack

We will produce a Methodology Pack: a practical guide for theatre and dance companies on creating performances for young audiences with accessibility built into storytelling and aesthetics.

You will not be asked to write the pack yourself, but you will:

  • Review drafts (in formats accessible to you)

  • Give feedback on accessibility, language, ethics, and usability

  • Help ensure it reflects high-quality inclusive practice

Commitment and Compensation

Advisory Board Work (Voluntary)

The Advisory Board role itself is voluntary and includes:

  • Three online meetings over the project period: Start of the project, Midpoint, and Final evaluation

  • Preparation time for reading and feedback (including feedback on the Methodology Pack)

Paid Professional Opportunities (Optional)

Additional paid professional opportunities may arise during the project. If invited, you would receive:

  • A professional fee

  • Travel and accommodation are covered if in-person participation is needed, including for an accompanying person or caregiver if required.

Paid roles may include:

  • Delivering or co-delivering workshops

These will offer theoretical and practical knowledge on several areas, such as:

  • audio-descriptions and multi-sensory strategies in dance and theatre for children;

These topics are not a complete list. We welcome new ideas and approaches from Advisory Board members, especially those based on lived experience and community practice.

  • Facilitating local focus groups with disabled and non-disabled children and young people.

This role may include:

  • Creating a safe, welcoming, and accessible space for participation
  • Introducing creative materials, movement, or discussion prompts in age-appropriate ways
  • Supporting participants to share feedback
  • Using non-verbal, playful, and multi-sensory facilitation methods where appropriate
  • Collaborating to translate participants’ feedback into the creative process.

  • Mentoring artistic teams during the creative process

This may include offering critical feedback and practical guidance during rehearsals and creation phases, with a focus on inclusive, anti-ableist, and accessibility-led artistic choices.

  • Contributing to the content or accessible formats of the Methodology Pack.

This may involve creating content and/or ideating and developing the Methodology Pack in accessible formats, drawing on inclusive, anti-ableist, and disability-led practice.

You can indicate during your application whether you are interested in these paid opportunities. Selection for paid work will be based on experience, availability, and project needs. Indicating whether you are interested in paid opportunities will not affect your selection for the International Advisory Board.

Saying that you are interested does not create any obligation. At this stage, we cannot yet provide full details about specific roles, schedules, or fees. If paid opportunities arise, you will always receive clear information and can decide freely whether to participate.

What Will You Gain by Joining?

By joining the International Advisory Board, you will:

  • Take on a leadership and advisory role in a European cooperation project

  • Gain international visibility and professional recognition
